FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which driveway surface lasts longest?

Concrete and brick paving, and well-laid asphalt that is sealed periodically, can all last for many years. The biggest factor in every case is the base underneath and good drainage, which is where we put our effort.

Can you resurface my existing driveway?

Often, yes. If the base is sound we can overlay or resurface it. If it has failed, we'll recommend repairing the base first so the new surface doesn't crack in the same places.

How long does a tar driveway last?

A well-built tar driveway on a properly compacted base typically lasts 15 to 20 years or more. Sealing fine cracks early and resealing the surface every few years extends its life considerably.

Tar or paving for my driveway?

Tar (asphalt) is quicker to lay, seamless and usually costs less over large areas. Brick paving offers colours and patterns and can be lifted and relaid in sections. Both last well on a properly prepared base; see the comparison on this page.

Why is my tar driveway cracking?

Most cracks start with water getting into a weak or poorly compacted base, or with tree roots and heavy vehicles. Sealing cracks early stops water getting in. Wide cracks or sunken areas usually need the base repaired before resurfacing.
